The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
